The University of Bremen (Department of Geosciences) is offering upon release of budgetary funding

2 Ph.D. positions for 3 years

The respective projects are part of the DFG Priority Program 1158 „Antarctic Research with Comparable Investigations in Arctic Sea Ice Areas “, and will be carried out in cooperation with the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR).

The project aims to reconstruct the uplift and exhumation history of the West Antarctic Rift system in the vicinity of the Ross Sea in response to tectonic and climatic changes. Both positions involve a participation in a two-month Antarctic expedition during the Austral summer 2009/10. Target areas are the Transantarctic Mountains of northern Victoria Land (terrestrial field campaign) and the coast of Marie Byrd Land (“Polarstern” cruise). The Ph.D. candidates will be responsible for structural mapping and sampling in the field, for analysing the samples by fission track and other isotopic dating techniques, and to interpret and model the generated data.

Methodological knowledge of thermochronological dating methods is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
